James King's Extra Bit
February 29, 2008
I think this film is truly terrible but here's a clip anyway. Seems aaaaages since Kill Bill, eh film fans? Let me know what you think!
Matthew Fox
February 28, 2008
Matthew popped in to talk about his new movie Vantage Point, his old tv show Party of Five and obviously we got him to dish all the dirt on Lost!
Mid-week Sneaky Peak
February 27, 2008
Loved the first Step Up movie and Step Up 2: The Streets hits cinemas soon, busting more moves than a triple bill of J Lo's Dancelife on MTV. And the big news is…Step Up: 3-D is rumoured to be on its way too! Enjoy…
Charlie was a brilliant guest on the show - he even braved the strong smells! He talked about Stardust, his new play and wearing women's clothing to parties!
Ashley Walters
February 26, 2008
He may have once stated that he had only 21 Seconds to go, but former So Solid MC Ashley Walters is proving to have a little more longevity that bandmates such as Harvey, Romeo and…er…can't remember any others. Acting since he was a littl'un, the artist-formally-known-as Asher D is currently staring alongside the beautifully toothed Melissa George in grimy thriller Waz and burns rubber this Summer in the long-awaited Wachowski Brothers blockbuster Speed Racer. Oh - just remembered Mr Shabz was also in So Solid Crew. Or was it Blazin' Squad?
The Oscar winning movie Once!
February 25, 2008
Now, you'll have heard me and Edith bang on about Once for ages and ages, but just in case you missed the interview first time around I thought we should put it up again.
It's a brilliant indie pic with a gorgeous soundtrack and it won an Oscar for Best Song for the heartbreaking "Falling Slowly". You need to check it out. A bit like an Irish, musical version of Lost In Translation (but better than that sounds), Once is a low-key but heartbreaking tale about the friendship between a busker and an immigrant in Dublin.
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova came on Edith's show last October - we knew it was going to big ages ago, you see! Enjoy!
Right, last minute additions! Don't forget, after you've read this of course, to check out the dresses, the winners and the Oscars in full. Also, make sure you have a look at Heather Alexander's report for Newsbeat too - she was hanging out at the parties and everything!
Yay Oscars! That time of year when people like Celine Dion are allowed to wear outfits like this...
Ah yes, 1998's back-to-front Galliano tuxedo. We've all done it.
So I'm now poised by the telly in the bowels of Radio One to give you my blow by blow account of the 80th Academy Awards. Let's hope it's a good 'un.
01.00am We're off! Er...except we're not. First up Claudia Winkleman anchoring Sky TV's coverage has to eek out the tension just a little bit more by showing pictures of the stars arriving and discussing their dresses. As Celine's not there this year, this is actually pretty dull.
01.15 Still hasn't started.
01.23 Still hasn't started.
01.30 At last it really has started!
01.31 First shot of Jack Nicholson in the front row wearing shades.
01.37 Second shot of Jack Nicholson in the front row wearing shades.
01.45 And the first award of the night goes to Elizabeth: The Golden Age for its costumes. I wasn't a huge fan of the movie but you can't deny that it had Tudor chic down to a tee. Jon Stewart's presenting stint seems a little bit downbeat but expected gags about the recent writers' strike get the A-listers tittering. Well, except for Tommy Lee Jones, sat behind Javier Bardem and remaining stoney-faced for the entire monologue. This is obviously no show for old men...
01.50 Congrats to the brilliant Ratatouille, winner of the Best Animated Feature award. First rat to win an Oscar since Russell Crowe in 2001.
02.19 Javier Bardem wins the Supporting Actor award for his menacing portrayal of psycho with a pudding bowl haircut in No Country For Old Men. He dedicates his award to co-star Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy Lee has his head down and appears to fiddling with his cuffs. Good to see he's cheered up in the last half hour...
02.28 Owen Wilson presents the award for Live Action Short Film. The only thing noticeably wrong with him is a very dodgy side-parting. Glad to have you back Owen. Hopefully the shaggy barnet will follow soon.
02.40 Your frock may be dodgy Tilda, but congrats on winning Best Supporting Actress in the brilliant Michael Clayton.
02.45 A quick reminder that last week saw the Oscar's Technical & Science Awards. The presenter was someone we all associate with science and technology...Jessica Alba.
03.14 Congrats to French newbie Marion Cotillard for picking up Best Actress for her role as iconic Gallic diva Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. If you ever want to check out a film about a midget alcoholic singer who was brought up by prostitutes, had 3 near fatal car crashes, enjoyed an affair with a boxer and a hairdresser and had 100,000 people at her funeral then I highly recommend it.
03.32 We're now in the infamous "boring middle bit" of the ceremony. The Bourne Ultimatum wins Best Editing and an old guy gets an Honorary Oscar. My eyes feel very heavy. Only looking at that picture of Jessica Alba up there is keeping me awake.
03.50 Think it's still going on. Not entirely sure coz I'm now on E-Bay.
03.51 Wow. Things have picked up massively now Glen Hansard has won Best Song for the heartbreaking "Falling Slowly", as featured in the brilliant indie pic Once. You need to check it out. A bit like an Irish, musical version of Lost In Translation (but better than that sounds), Once is a low-key but heartbreaking tale about the friendship between a busker and an immigrant in Dublin. Colin Farrell spotted applauding with particular gusto when the announcement was made.
04.00 The bit where movie-making's recently deceased are remembered, ending predictably but deservedly with a nod to Heath Ledger.
04.24 You can tell that Harrison Ford's got a new movie out soon since the famously grumpy ex-carpenter has actually turned up to Oscars to present an award. He walks onto the stage with the same bemused face my grandad used to have when he woke up from an afternoon nap and couldn't remember where he was. Bless you Harrison. The look in your eyes when you presented the Original Screenplay award to a leopardskin-clad, ex-stripper called Diablo Cody for Juno was priceless.
04.40 And finally...the biggies! Whilst I've been gabbling on-air with Greg, Daniel Day-Lewis, The Coen Brothers and No Country For Old Men pick up awards for Best Actor, Director and Picture respectively. In other words, everything that was expected to win did win. Hooray! Claudia's still on the telly saying "What a night" but I'd beg to differ. Good awards but the show was pretty average, with Jon Stewart providing no mega laughs and not even thespian Daniel Day giving us a luvvie blub on-stage. Oh well, here's hoping for 2009. HIgh School Musical 3 for Best Movie anyone?
S-A-T-C: An even better trailer!
February 22, 2008
I'm McLovin' this new, two and a half minute trailer for Sex & The City. Weddings! Shoes! Carrie in her pants! Not long to go now...
Uma Thurman
February 21, 2008
Uma's currently starring in The Accidental Husband - but she's also got Chris Moyles chasing her... have a listen and find out more!
James King meets Jack Black
February 20, 2008
The man's a legend and I was lucky enough to meet him waaay back at the end of last year to chat about his awesome new pic, Be Kind Rewind. You might know it as the movie where Jack and Mos Def make their own lo-fi versions of classic movies, in a bid to save an old-school video store in a downtrodden suburb of New York. It's also surprisingly sweet too, focusing on the importance of community and togetherness, all tied together with trademark beautiful weirdness by director Michel Gondry.
The pic's of JB re-making Ghostbusters although when I met him he had a blonde crop in an Eminem stylee. We talked hip-hop, selling out and, randomly, a range of grooming products that share his name. Enjoy...
Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol
February 19, 2008
Gary came in to give Edith some advice on making our very own James Bond theme tune. He also talked about his favourite soundtrack... it might surprise you!
James King's New Extra Bit
February 18, 2008
As well as watching films, hanging out with LK and, of course, giving my girlfriend a Valentine's Day to remember, I've been swotting hard this week. Find out why by listening to this week's small but perfectly formed extra bit!

The latest Jack Black offering is here! The comedy involves its characters having to recreate well-known films after their video store's collection gets erased. Here's a taster of them attempting Rush Hour 2 to keep you going until it's out on 22nd February...

A message from Sylvester Stallone...*
February 11, 2008
"Hi kids. It's Grandad Stallone here! I don't know if you've heard of me or not but I used to be famous in something called the 1980s...
That's me there. Bit of a looker, eh?
Anyhoo, you might have heard of me from old films like Rocky, Rambo and...er...Rocky and I just wanted to write something on this new fangled inter-web whatsitsname to tell you how you won't be hearing me talking to Edith or James on the afternoon movie show.
Y'see, I'm a bit awkward and didn't want to leave the comfort of my 5 star hotel room to come to Radio 1 and do an interview. And my hip plays me up a bit in this cold y'know...
Still, seeing as my new Rambo film hardly set the box-office alight over in the States, you're probably not that bothered anyway. Can you believe it children?! A concert film starring someone called Hannah Montana has made more money than my new film?! I dunno what the world's comnig to. Music hasn't been the same since that nice Bing Crosby died.
Oh well. I'd better toddle along now for my afternoon nap. Cheerio!"
*not actually a message from Sly but, like, you guessed that anyway.
Was watching the North West's own Daniel Craig in a movie at the weekend. Is it just me or is the ice cool 007 turning into scary Vladimir Putin, off of Russia?
"Dead sexski" as Edith Bowman might say...
He may look like Tom Selleck off of the 80s with that humungous 'tache but face-fungus aside, Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood totally rocks. Both he and the movie are pretty intense - it's the story of greedy oil baron in early 20th century American who'll stop at nothing to get rich - but the film's so like nothing else you've seen, you need it in your life. I caught up with the celebrated luvvie to talk learning lines, working with director PT Anderson and how Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood has done the creepy score...
BAFTA Film Awards 2008 - Question the Stars!
February 08, 2008
BBC Movies is giving you the chance to put your questions to your favourite Bafta stars - send them in here and they might be asked on Sunday night!
Cloverfield Director - Matt Reeves
February 06, 2008
I was lucky enough to chat to Matt Reeves about directing one of the biggest films of the year. It's had so much hype and might make you feel sick, but it's brilliant.
I went to chat to Ellen the other day (in person rather than on a burger phone) and she was lovely. Here's the full interview, exclusive to the blog, for your listening pleasure!
This week it's all about Jalba... Jessica Alba to everyone else, she lets me call her Jalba, cos she likes me... anyway enough of my musings, let's get back to why we're here - the midweek sneaky peak!
It's Monday - It's James King's Extra Bit!
February 03, 2008
To quote TLC's hit single "Creep" off of the 90s. Yes. It's me again. And I'm back... with my Monday extra bit. Enjoy!
